POWER OF SILENCE

POWER OF SILENCE

Baba said, “If anyone talks ten words at us, let us answer with one word, if we reply at all. Do not battle with anyone” in Baba’s Charters and sayings, #211.

To Anjali there came a girl. Her face was flushed and her body was trembling. And she said, “I have spoken to a friend words which were as unkind as they were untrue. And my voice was terrible as the thunder of the sky. Tell me how may I undo the wrong I have committed?”

Anjali picked up a sheet of red coloured paper. She tore it up into sixty-four pieces and gave them to the girl, saying, “Go and scatter them in the street below.”

The girl did as she was told. As soon as she scattered the bits of paper, a strong gust of wind blew and the pieces of paper flew hither and thither and were lost to view.

When the girl returned, Anjali asked her, “My child! Now go and bring back the little bits of paper.”

The girl went to the street and searched for the little bits of paper. But do what she would, she could not find a single piece. After a futile search, she came back to Anjali, “I cannot find a single bit of paper,” she said.

And Anjali said, “So it is with the words you speak. No sooner do they leave your lips than they are scattered and lost forever. Do what you will; you can never get them back again.

“So take care of your words. Before you speak anything, make sure that what you are about to speak is better than silence; else remain silent. If you observe this simple rule, you will not have to repent.

“And remember, if you would bear witness to truth, be silent. For truth ever is silent. They, who talk much, travel far from truth. They who commune with truth are silent.”

ARE YOU BRAVE ENOUGH?

ARE YOU BRAVE ENOUGH?

There is a moving incident in the life of St. Anthony who, for the love of God, went and stayed in a desert. Far from the madding crowds of men, he lived a life of communion with God. Yet was he not free from trails.

One day, he had to undergo intense suffering. When he emerged from his trails, he said to God, “Ah, Beloved God, where were You when I was in great distress?”

He heard the Voice of God say, “My child, I was with you all time, even as I am with you now! I wanted to see you how brave you were!”

DECEMBER 31 - A Final Word

DECEMBER 31 - A Final Word

Then one of the elders said to me, “Do not weep! See, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has triumphed.” — REVELATION 5:5

On this last day of the year, we look to the future and wonder, Could this be the year of Christ’s return? If so, you will experience for the first time what it feels like to be pure and blameless. You will see your loved one walk without a limp. You will witness the stroke survivor walk without his cane. You will know family members and friends as God intended them to be all along, their best attributes shining brightly, and their worst traits gone with the wind. No bruises on your daughter, free from the shackles of an abusive marriage. No confused thoughts, no mental illness, no Alzheimer’s disease.

You will see what lessons the angels and demons learned about God from observing him at work in your mother, languishing in that nursing home. You will stand amazed at how your perseverance through pain sent

repercussions rumbling through the lives of people you never knew were watching. You will be awestruck to see how your endurance through hardship forced others you hardly even knew to make tough decisions about God and suffering. Oh, what a wonderful day that will be!

If you faced deep heartache and disappointment this year, take encouragement that soon the Lamb who sits on the throne — the Lion of the tribe of Judah — will triumph. Every tear will be wiped away. Let this fact encourage you for the weeks and months ahead. Commit afresh and anew to deepen your walk with Jesus Christ in the new year, preserving for yourself “an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade — kept in heaven for you” (1 Peter 1:4).

Lord Jesus, I look forward to the day when you will receive endless praise and honor and glory for your amazing grace. Thank you for preserving my life through this year and impart fresh grace in my heart to honor and obey you in the year ahead.

DECEMBER 30 - Amen

DECEMBER 30 – Amen

Here is a trustworthy saying: If we died with him, we will also live with him; if we endure, we will also reign with him. If we disown him, he will also disown us; if we are faithless, he will remain faithful, for he cannot disown himself. — 2 TIM OTHY 2:11 – 13

What a great verse on which to end our year together. For here is a trustworthy saying: it really is all about Jesus. We’ve covered so many promises of God in the last 364 days, and every one of them — every

single verse — points in some way to Jesus. He is the Word of Life (1 John 1:1). Revelation 22:13 frames Jesus with these timeless words, for the Savior himself proclaims, “I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End.”

What more can we say? Who else would we turn to? There is no one like Jesus. And I think I can hear you say “Amen!” to that. Second Corinthians 1:20 (KJV) says, “For all the promises of God in him are yea, and in him Amen, unto the glory of God by us.” Amen signifies “so be it!” Every promise of God that has blessed you this year ultimately finds its conclusion in Christ. Every insight and bit of wisdom you’ve garnered, every obedience you’ve learned, every step higher into a more prayerful life, all of it finds its center — it’s beginning and end — in Jesus Christ.

You are about to turn the corner into a brand new year. It is my prayer that the plans, decisions, and choices you make, the way you will spend your time, the thoughts you entertain and the company you keep, the manner in which you live before others, all of it will point to Jesus. May his glory go before you in the new year, friend!

Jesus Christ . . . Son of God . . . Lord of heaven and earth . . . in the year to come, help me to showcase your glory and greatness in fresh new ways. And to this, I say, “Amen! So be it!”

WHAT DO YOU WANT TO BE DOING FOR GOD TEN YEARS FROM NOW?

WHAT DO YOU WANT TO BE DOING FOR GOD TEN YEARS FROM NOW?

Imagine what your life would look like in the next five to ten years if you dedicated yourself to becoming the woman God designed you to be and to accomplishing something enormous for him and with him. Today, let’s focus on the second half of that question: accomplishing something. Do you daydream about what he wants of you? What if you flipped that idea upside down and allowed yourself to reflect on what you want to do for him? That’s not considered selfish thinking, by the way, because God is the one who instills wholesome musings in our hearts. What gift could you give to God that would make your heart sing? An even better way to phrase that question is this: What gift will God give to you and through you to the people he is sending you to serve? Whatever it is, remember that, if God has purposed it, it will happen.

WHAT LONG-TERM PLAN HAS GOD LAID ON YOUR HEART?

Do you find yourself talking to anyone who will listen about the day you can establish a mentoring program for pregnant teens, campaign against indecent television shows, begin a local ministry for families who have an incarcerated parent, start a  church in an impoverished rural area, or teach your grandchildren about Jesus? Are you anxious to start an intercessory prayer team at your church or, more boldly, to help put prayer in public schools? Do you have plans to become a licensed marriage, family, and child counselor or a foster parent for chemically dependent babies? Lisa Winters Cox, one of television’s original Doublemint twins, loves the daydream God gave her years ago.

LISA WINTERS COX IS LOOKING FORWARD

Lisa has moved from a career of television spots and modeling to a ministry that includes speaking, teaching, writing, and dramatic arts. She is a wife, mother, actress, and dancer.

She says, “Although I am a genetic copy of my identical twin, I have discovered that I was created for a unique spiritual purpose.”

Lisa explains that she recently had to let go of her fear and pride and stop saying, “You’ve got the wrong woman, God!”

Now she says, “Here am I, Lord. Send me.” She is on the creative arts team at her church, and she is writing and teaching her first Bible study, That I Might See: A Look at the Healing Miracles of Jesus.

What would Lisa like to be doing for God ten years from now? She hopes to be ministering with her immediate family and mother, as well as her two sisters and their families. They know that they are called by God to encourage those who need spiritual and emotional healing. They have an incredible blend of gifts, talents, and training; and they envision a retreat/conference/ arts center. Lisa comments: “God did not put long-term daydreams in our hearts to frustrate us. They are there to pull us ever closer to him and to his great plans for our lives.”

What Do You Want to Be Doing for God Ten Years from Now? Solomon Made Long-Term Plans with God

King Solomon and his laborers spent seven years building the temple of the Lord in Jerusalem. (This does not account for the many years King David spent in preparation to build.) Read 1 Kings 6:37–38. Even if the project had taken Solomon and his crew fifty years, do you think they should have undertaken it? Why?

SCRIPTURE TO PONDER

We constantly pray for you, that our God may count you worthy of his calling, and that by his power he may fulfill every good purpose of yours and every act prompted by your faith. We pray this so that the name of our Lord Jesus may be glorified in you, and you in him, according to the grace of our God and the Lord Jesus Christ. (2 Thessalonians 1:11–12)

SUGGESTED PRAYER

Dear Lord Jesus Christ, I constantly pray that God may count me, _________, worthy of his calling, and that by his power he may fulfill every good purpose of mine and every act prompted by my faith. I pray this so that your name, Lord Jesus, may be glorified in me and me in you, according to your grace. I also pray today that my heart and mind will be filled to overflowing with “impossible” plans that you have already chosen for me to fulfill. Look with favor on me, as you guide me into the miracles you designed for me. Let me stand amazed at your plan and strategy for my life.

THE PRAYING HANDS

THE PRAYING HANDS

Baba said, “We should mean well and do well. Whatever is destined to happen, will happen" in Sri Sai Satcharitra, Ch.XII.

Back in the fifteenth century, in a tiny village near Nuremberg, lived a family with eighteen children. Eighteen! In order merely to keep food on the table for this mob, the father and head of the household, a goldsmith by profession, worked almost eighteen hours a day at his trade and any other paying chore he could find in the neighborhood.

Despite their seemingly hopeless condition, two of Albrecht Durer the Elder's children had a dream. They both wanted to pursue their talent for art, but they knew full well that their father  would never be financially able to send either of them to Nuremberg to study at the Academy.

After many long discussions at night  in their crowded bed, the two boys finally worked out a pact. They would toss a coin. The loser would go down into the nearby mines and, with his earnings, support his brother while he attended the academy.

Then, when that brother who won the toss completed his studies, in four years, he would  support the other brother at the academy, either with sales of his artwork or, if necessary, also by laboring in the mines.

They tossed a coin on a Sunday morning after church. Albrecht Durer won the toss and went off to Nuremberg. Albert went down into the dangerous mines and, for the next four years, financed his brother, whose work at the academy was almost an immediate sensation. Albrecht's etchings, his woodcuts, and his oils were far better than those of most of his professors, and by the time he graduated, he was beginning to earn considerable fees for his commissioned works.

When the young artist returned to his village, the Durer family held a festive dinner on their lawn to celebrate Albrecht's triumphant homecoming. After a long and memorable meal, punctuated with music and laughter, Albrecht rose from his honored position at the head of the table to drink a toast to his beloved brother for the years of sacrifice that had enabled Albrecht to fulfill his ambition. His closing words were, "And now, Albert, blessed brother of mine, now it is your turn.

Now you can go to Nuremberg to pursue your dream, and I will take care of you."

All heads turned in eager expectation to the far end of the table where Albert sat, tears streaming down his pale face, shaking his lowered head from side to side while he sobbed and repeated, over and over, "No ...no ...no ...no."

Finally, Albert rose and wiped the tears from his cheeks. He glanced down the long table at the faces he loved, and then, holding his hands close to his right cheek, he said softly, "No, brother. I cannot go to Nuremberg. It is too late for me. Look ... look what four years in the mines have done to my hands! The bones in every finger have been smashed at least once, and lately I have been suffering from arthritis so badly in my right hand that I cannot even hold a glass to return your toast, much less make delicate lines on parchment or canvas with a pen or a brush. No, brother ... for me it is too late."

More than 450 years have passed. By now, Albrecht Durer's hundreds of masterful portraits, pen and silver-point sketches, watercolors, charcoals, woodcuts, and copper engravings hang in every great museum in the world, but the odds are great that you, like most people, are familiar with only one of Albrecht Durer's works.

More than merely being familiar with it, you very well may have a reproduction hanging in your home or office. One day, to pay homage to Albert for all that he had sacrificed, Albrecht Durer painstakingly drew his brother's abused hands with palms together and thin fingers stretched skyward. He called his powerful drawing simply "Hands," but the entire world almost immediately opened their hearts to his great masterpiece and renamed his tribute of love "The Praying Hands."

The next time you see a copy of that touching creation, take a second look.

Let it be your reminder, if you still need one, that no one - no one - - ever makes it alone!

IT WILL NOT LET ME GO

IT WILL NOT LET ME GO

Baba said, “There are two sorts of things viz., the Good and the Pleasant; the former deals with spiritual affairs, and the latter with mundane matters. Both these approach man for acceptance. He has to think and choose one of them. The wise man prefers the Good to the Pleasant; but the unwise, through greed and attachment, chooses the Pleasant” in Sri Sai Satcharitra, Ch. XVI, XVII.

There was a sanyasin who dwelt in a cottage near a river. He was an able swimmer.

One day, as he stood on the banks of the river, he saw, from a distance, a plush rug floating on the waters.

It was the season of winter. The nights were bitterly cold. And the sanyasin said himself, “Night after night, I shiver in the cold. Here is a beautiful plush rug which will give me the warmth I need.”

So saying, he plunged into the cold water and, crossing the swift current, caught hold of the plush rug.

No sooner had he done so, then he let forth a cry of agony, “Save me! Save me!”

His fellow-sanyasin, who stood on the river bank, thinking that the plush rug was too heavy for him to drag over the waters, called out to him, “Why don’t you let the rug go?”

Quick came the reply, “I have let it go, but it will not let me go!”

What he had thought to be a plush rug, was, in reality, a water-bear which had caught hold of him, and would not let go!

So it happened with many of us. We run after the things of earth, after wealth, possessions, pleasures, power, thinking that they will give us comfort. Once we catch hold f them we find that we are trapped by them. All howsoever much we struggle to be set free; we find no way of escape.

WHAT'S MISSING IN YOUR LIFE?

WHATS MISSING IN YOUR LIFE?

On Day 30, we focused on what equipping you still might need to do God’s work. Today, let’s take a slightly different approach and hone in on yet-to-be-satisfied personal wants or wishes. Ask yourself: “What would make my life more complete?” Has the lack of it upset you for years? Have you cried your heart out over it? God cares about what you have to say today and about how you feel. Don’t let any sadness or frustration in this area steal opportunities from you to live the glorious life God has planned for you.

MISSING IN ACTION

Have you ever felt like filing a “missing in action” report about one of these: hope, friendship, love, dreams, passion, clarity, integrity, or goals? Is one of these missing: spiritual growth, a date night with your husband, play days with your children, downtime for yourself, an organizational system?

Is family unity, a Sabbath rest, personal joy, or a college fund for your children missing? Is it health, income, or a much anticipated marriage proposal? Let Lori Salierno, CEO of Celebrate Life International (CLI), speak wisdom into your life today through her story.

LORI SALIERNO GAVE GOD HER HEARTACHE

Lori is the founder of CLI, a nonprofit organization that promotes leadership skills and character development among students in public schools and the juvenile justice system. She is a nationally-known speaker who has written four books, including Real Solutions for Ordering Your Private Life.

Lori says that her spiritual life is “an adventure and a party combined.” Her goal is to glorify God and enjoy him forever.

She is in the process of introducing her God-given teen leadership program, Teach One to Lead One, into fifty-one thousand high schools across the United States, as a means of cultivating the hearts of seventy-two million teenagers for a relationship with Jesus Christ.

What’s missing for Lori? She says, “My husband and I have been married for twenty-two years and have not been able to have children. But God actually took away my desire to be a birth mother and replaced it with an incredible passion for at risk students. He did this by placing an intense call on my life to reach our nation’s children in this generation. What an awesome privilege to be used in this way.” Lori summarizes: “God can use the things that are missing from our lives (even the absence of children) to bring glory to his name. I’m a good example of his faithfulness in tough situations!”

What’s Missing in Your Life? Eve Felt Something Was Missing

Eve wanted to be more like God, and so she succumbed to temptation in the Garden of Eden. Read Genesis 3:1–6. Like Eve, have you searched after something that you thought was missing in your life, only to discover that you wished you hadn’t found it?

SCRIPTURE TO PONDER

“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you

hope and a future.” (Jeremiah 29:11)

SUGGESTED PRAYER

Dear Lord, you know the plans you have for me, _________. You have declared that they are plans to prosper me and not to harm me, plans to give me hope and a future. Today I thank you for your well-thought-out plans for my future. I also pray about what I perceive to be missing from my life. Help me today to give my missing piece(s) to you with confidence that you will use my apparent lack for your good and holy purposes. I know you see the bigger picture, and I trust you to fill my void with your presence. I choose to live a life of gratitude about what I do have, rather than a life of sadness about what I don’t have.

DECEMBER 29 - Come Quickly

DECEMBER 29 - Come Quickly

The Spirit and the bride say, “Come!” And let him who hears say, “Come!” Whoever is thirsty, let him come; and whoever wishes, let him take the free gift of the water of life. — REVELATION 22:17

The writers of the New Testament were a bruised and battered bunch. This is why they wrote so much about heaven. The hope of heaven stoked fire in their bones, and their writings were laced with constant references to the second coming of Christ, to the time when their Savior would restore all things and complete the kingdom. Continually they were praying, “Maranatha! Come, Lord Jesus!” They were eagerly waiting for Jesus Christ to be revealed (1 Co rin thi ans 1:7).

These suffering saints weren’t trying to escape the painful realities of earth; they gladly endured their hardships. They were able to be happy because they knew heaven would reveal the earthshaking significance

behind each tear and affliction. They likened themselves to soldiers poised on the watchtower, workers hoeing for the harvest, athletes straining toward the finish line, and virgins waiting wide-eyed in the night, lamps trimmed, hearts afire, and scanning the horizon for the arrival of their beloved. For New Testament writers who suffered — and suffered much — the world was no party. Rather, they were anticipating the coming Party.

We say “Come, Lord Jesus” with one breath, but in the next, we must always pray, “And until you return, give me grace to bear up under my hardship, peace to accept my life circumstances, and courage to tell others about Jesus Christ so that they too can joyously anticipate the Savior’s return.” So “strengthen the feeble hands, steady the knees that give way; say to those with fearful hearts, ‘Be strong, do not fear; your God will come . . . he will come to save you’ ” (Isaiah 35:3 – 4).

Lord Jesus, I recognize that this earth can never keep its promises; it can never satisfy. Help me to set my heart on heavenly glories above. Help me to make sure I invite others to that heavenly Party!

PAINS AND PLEASAURES

PAINS AND PLEASAURES

All our feelings of pain and pleasure depend upon the attitude of our mind” – Sri Sai Satcharitra, Ch. XX.

There was a Buddhist bhikkhu, who was the son of a rich nobleman and, at one time, lived in a palace. Coming under the influence of the Buddha, he renounced his material wealth and the comforts of his palace and accepted the hardships of a mendicant’s life. He slept on the bare ground underneath the trees. He ate what he got by way of alms. He felt happy.

One day, he suffered a severe attack of rheumatic pain. At first, he treated it with indifference. Days passed by, but the pain persisted. He could not even meditate properly. He felt miserable. Gone was the joy of life. However hard he tried, he could not recapture his lost peace. His mind became agitated; he felt agitated and weary.

One morning, as he was out begging for alms, he found a little girl playing with her friends. She was a cripple; she had only one leg and hobbled on crutches. But she was happy as a lark singing on a tree. She shouted and laughed and made merry with other children. Seeing her, the bhikkhu felt ashamed of him.

“This little girl who has only one leg is bright and happy,” he said to himself; “and I, a disciple of Buddha, despair because of little pain!”

He returned, a new man. The pain no longer bothered him. He was truly free!

How true it is that attitudes are more important than facts!

WHAT EQUIPPING DO YOU STILL NEED FOR GOD'S WORK?

WHAT EQUIPPING DO YOU STILL NEED FOR GODS WORK?

God has everything you need to complete the assignments he gives you. On a moment’s notice, he can send you whatever you require. So, what is it you need to do his work on earth?

Talk to him about it today. God is waiting for you to ask for his help. Ask him to give you the tools, abilities, people, and supplies you need. Rely on his infinite possibilities when you start to get overwhelmed with your finite amount of time, insight, or grace toward others. That which is impossible for you is possible with God. Ask him to prepare you well for your life mission.

YOU NEED WHAT!?

What do you need most? Is it discernment about who to trust, or is it vision, courage, or financial resources? God can provide you with a loving support system, energy, and even a platform. Do you need permission from some key person to proceed? Do you need a spiritual mentor to help you comprehend your sufficiency in Christ? Do you need more faith, clarity, knowledge, or balance in life? Do you want to ask God for more creativity, compassion, or for a strategic plan or a ministerial network? Ask him for what you need today. Is it the development of your character (for example, confidence or reliability) or the development of spiritual habits (tithing, fasting, or a simple lifestyle)? Barb Lindquist, the world’s top-ranked female, professional, Olympic distance-triathlete, figured out exactly what she needs and now she is asking for it.

BARB LINDQUIST NEEDS SOMETHING MORE

Barb was a world-ranked swimmer at Stanford University during her college years. She feels blessed that triathlons exist, because she loves to swim, bike, and run. Triathlons, like all sports, are performance-based, and Barb admits that it’s a very human reaction to get feelings of self-worth from racing well.

But God has shown Barb that he loves her no matter how she races. Living this truth takes away the pressure of racing well and frees her to express the athletic abilities God has given her. Triathloning is Barb’s mission field! She travels around the world, training and racing for God’s glory—and telling fellow triathletes and sports fans how much she loves Jesus.

Barb says that she still needs God’s boldness to do his work better. She knows that in unfamiliar social settings, she can be shy and quiet about God’s extravagant love for her, instead of radiating his boldness. She adds, “God gives each of us unique abilities. Then he equips us with extra blessings (like boldness, time, money, etc.) to maximize our work for him. We please God when we ask to be equipped and when we rely on his strength—not our own.”

What Equipping Do You Still Need for God’s Work? David Needed Equipping

When David went out to meet the giant Goliath, he chose not to wear a helmet and coat of armor, but he went equipped with the power of the Lord Almighty. Read 1 Samuel 17:32– 51. When you fight “giants,” what do you always like to take with you?

SCRIPTURE TO PONDER

And now, may the God of peace, who brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, equip you with all you need for doing his will. (Hebrews 13:20–21, NLT)

SUGGESTED PRAYER

Dear Lord, I pray now that you, the God of peace, who brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, will equip me, _________, with all I need for doing your will. In fact, today I ask expectantly for a dramatic equipping to do your work on earth and serve you more completely!

So . . . What Insight, Prayer, or Action Step Has God Laid on Your Heart Today?

DECEMBER 28 - My Savior Leads Me . . . and Francie

DECEMBER 28 - My Savior Leads Me . . . and Francie

The watchman opens the gate for him, and the sheep listen to his voice. He calls his own sheep by name and leads

them out. When he has brought out all his own, he goes on ahead of them, and his sheep follow him because they

know his voice. — JOHN 10:3 – 4

When we arrived in Beijing, China, we knew the next two weeks would be crowded with speaking engagements at churches and rehab clinics. To stave off weariness, my secretary, Francie, and I decided to

memorize a hymn as we drove around town. Whenever we piled into our van, we’d start singing “All the Way My Savior Leads Me.”

All the way my Savior leads me; What have I to ask beside?

Can I doubt His tender mercy, Who thru life has been my guide?

Heav’nly peace, divinest comfort, Here by faith in Him to dwell!

For I know what’er befall me, Jesus doeth all things well.

Morning, noon, and night, we lightened our journey by singing until we knew by heart all three verses, backward and forward! It helped us to remain focused on Jesus, our Shepherd; we were his sheep, following his lead. Francie and I laughingly labeled ourselves “The Singing Ewes.” On the last day, as we drove to the airport, we sang of our wonderful Shepherd one more time — our Chinese pastor-host turned from the front seat and said, “You people back there sing a lot !”

James 5:13 says, “Is any one of you in trouble? He should pray. Is anyone happy? Let him sing songs of praise.” The words to hymns make excellent prayers — especially when you find it hard to describe your feelings and concerns to God. Consider the last verse of Francie’s and my hymn: “All the way my Savior leads me; / Oh, the fullness of His love! / Perfect rest to me is promised / In my Father’s house above: / When my spirit, cloth’d immortal, / Wings its flight to realms of day, / This my song thru endless ages: / Jesus led me all the way.”4

Oh faithful Shepherd, bless you for leading me all the way through this day. I trust you with your rod and staff, guiding and encouraging me all the way.
