Balakrishna G. Upasani Sastri, Professor of Sanskrit, went to Hardwar and Tapovan (Swargashram) and saw a saint who told him that a saligram held as an heirloom by the upasanis for many generations had been given by him. When asked about his identity, that saint said in Hindustani, "lo! There was a tree (or log). One came down. The other went up. You will come to know". And then he went out of sight.

 

Many years later, at the end of 1911, he was going about to trace the whereabouts of his younger brother, Kasinath now known as Upasani Baba. He alighted at Kopergaon at the request of the local mamlatdar who sent him to Shirdi. When he went to Baba,

 

Baba: Go to Khandoba's

 

Balakrishna G. Upasani Sastri: When I have seen you, Baba, I have seen all the Gods.

 

Again Baba: Go to Khandoba's.

 

When Balakrishna G. Upasani Sastri came out of the Mosque and mentioned Baba's order, people told him that Kasinath Upasani Sastri was at Khandoba's. thus Baba without being told, found out Balakrishna G. Upasani Sastri's relationship and quest. When Balakrishna G. Upasani Sastri returned to Baba, Baba spoke in Hindustani the same words that were spoken by the Sadhu at Tapovan.

 

"There was a tree (or log). Two persons were up over that. One came down and the other went up."

Sai Baba thus showed that he was the Tapovan saint.

Our Beloved Sadguru Sainath, please accept our humble prayers on this Holy Day of Guruvaar. Baba, we have been hurt and disillusioned, we feel lonely and lost, we find tragic situations difficult to accept, our fears destroying us, and we reach the dead end of a blind pathway and go into pieces. Life is difficult and we are constantly searching for a way out. We totally surrendered to Your Lotus Feet and asking You to create order out of chaos, happiness out of misery, peace out of turmoil and integrate our life to make it more meaningful and beautiful. Baba, on this holy day we start our prayers by reading your divine words in Shri Sai Samartha Satcharita.

 

 

There was a lock-up, near which Sai stood outside, quietly and unmovingly seeing the scene.

 

Seeing Maharaj nearby, folding both his hands, he spoke in a humble and pitiable voice.

 

 "Baba, having heard your fame I came to your feet. Why has this happened to me when you are present here? "

 

Maharaj replied: "One must suffer for one's deeds". The man said with great humility: "I have not done anything wrong.

 

At least, not in this life, whereby I have to suffer this hardship". Whereupon Maharaj said: "Then it must have been in another life".

 

He thereupon replied: "What do I know about the previous life? And if at all there is anything, it should burn to ashes by your darshan, certainly.

 

It should burn like a blade of grass in the fire at your darshan. Why then have I not been freed from it? "

 

Then Maharaj said to him: "Do you have so much faith?" When the man replied in the affirmative, he instructed him to close his eyes.

 

As he stood with his eyes closed, as instructed, at that moment he heard a thump, a sound as if someone had fallen down.

 

He was startled by this sudden sound. He opened his eyes and began to look around. He found himself free and the policeman lay on the ground, covered with blood.

 

He was very frightened by this. He began to look at Sainath, who laughed and said to him: "You are well caught now.

 

Now an officer will come and after observing everything, will certainly declare you to be the culprit. He will arrest you again".

 

Then the person said sincerely, "Baba, what you say is true. Now, do something and have me released. No one else except you can protect me".

 

Hearing this Sai said: "Close your eyes again". After doing that, when he opened the eyes, he saw another strange sight.

 

He was outside the lock-up and Maharaj Sai was near him. He did an eight fold obeisance. Then Baba asked him:

 

"Think well and tell me whether there is any difference between your prostration that you have done now and the ones that you have been doing before this?"

 

Then, the man replied: "As different as the sky is from the earth! My earlier prostrations were done for monetary gains but this one is to acknowledge you as God.

Blessed Devotee who Experienced Baba's Miracle before 1918

Baba answered prayers so swiftly and saved His devotee

 

"I may be here in My physical body, and you may be far away beyond the seven seas. Yet, whatever you do there I know instantly. Wherever you may be, when you spread your hands before Me in supplication with faith and devotion, there I stand behind you day and night, as steadfast as your faith and devotion is," said Baba to Cholkar (Sai Satcharitra Ch.15).

 

Baba's words are true for each and every bhakta (devotee) even now; as they were then. This is such a Leela where Baba literally went beyond the seven seas to rescue a bhakta.

 

It was during World War I; Capt. Jahanghir F. Daruwala was at sea, with his fleet of ships. To his utter dismay he realized that all but three of his ships were hit by the enemy and were sinking fast. Soon these three ships with the passengers, and himself would meet the same fate. Being a good Captain he hoped to ferry the remaining ships to safety.

 

He had Baba's photograph in his pocket. He promptly took it out and earnestly prayed to Baba to come to their rescue. Just as he has praying, Baba sit­ting in the Dwarkamai shouted"Haq, haq". The devo­tees surrounding Baba, were astonished to see Baba completely drenched, from head to toe. The water flowed in torrents, and the Dwarkamai soon became a pool of water. The devotees simply removed buckets and buckets of water from the Dwarkamai for about an hour.  Then they gave Baba dry clothes to wear.

 

As Baba was silent about the cause of His being drenched, one of the devotees drank the water as tirth (holy water) and found it extremely salty. He wondered at that, but kept quiet. Simultaneously, at sea, Capt. Daruwala saw Baba in person, pull and tow his ships to safety. On the third day after this incident Baba re­ceived a telegram from the Captain, thanking Him for the rescue operation. Immediately on his return he came to Shirdi and fell at Baba's feet. He thanked Baba for answering his prayers so swiftly and saving the lives of his crew and the passengers. Capt. Daruwala was an ardent devotee and he took a great deal of interest in Baba's affairs. He donated Rs.2,200/- in two install­ments for the repair of the Sabha Mandap. As a small 'thank you gesture^'

Baba: If anyone is angry with another, he wounds me to the quick. If any one abuses another, I feel the pain. If anyone bravely endures the abuse, I feel highly pleased. 

 

Baba to Jog: Give me dakshina.

Jog (flaring up): You know I have not got a single pie. How can I give, Baba'?

Baba: Do not give, but why do you lose your temper?

Baba to R B Purandhare: If anybody comes and abuses you or punishes you, do not quarrel with him. If you cannot endure it, speak a simple word or two, or else leave the place. But, do not battle with him and give tit for tat. I feel sick and disgusted when you quarrel with others.

Baba to Mrs. MW Pradhan: If anyone talks ten words at us, let us answer with one word, if we reply at all. Do not battle with anyone. 

 

Baba's Control of Anger 

When Baba was in a towering rage, Uddhavesa Bua came, prostrated and asked for leave; Baba, cooling down, spoke tenderly to him.-Are you going? When will you come? You need not come again and again every fifteen days. I am with you. Well, go. 

When Baba was in towering passion, Samant, Police Sub-Inspector stood at a distance and thought that unless Baba gave him leave immediately, he would, be too late for his train and have to meet official trouble. 

Baba, at once: Tell all those who want to go, to come at once and take their Udhi.

Our Beloved Sadguru Sainath, please accept our humble prayers on this Holy Day of Guruvaar. Baba, we all want to be innovative, intelligent, incredible and extraordinary. Baba, what for we need all these things, just to elevate our ego and show our pride to the world. No, by having all these, we don't want to enter into the clutches of maya and slip away from your path. Baba, we don't ask anything from you, but you know our eligibility and capability, accordingly bless us whatever require for a peaceful life. Baba, on this holy day we start our prayers by reading your divine words in Shri Sai Samartha Satcharita.

 

 

Once, Baba appeared in a dream of a Punjabi Brahmin, whose name was Ramlal and who was a resident of Bombay.

 

The sky, the wind, the sun, the rain and other deities – due to the power of their grace, whatever knowledge one has of outward and inward objects, that are known as the waking state.

 

When all the senses are at rest, arises the awakening of the subliminal impressions of the waking condition. This takes the form of cognition and the person who cognizes. This is the indication of the dream state.

 

His dream was strange. He did not know Baba's form or attributes. He had never had darshan earlier. "Come to me", he said.

 

From his appearance, the person looked like a great saint, but who was he and from where? When Ramlal awoke he was deep in thoughts.

 

He felt like going, but he did not have an address or his whereabouts. But he who calls for darshan, he alone knows to make the arrangements.

 

Then, that same afternoon as he was casually walking along the road, he saw a picture in a shop which startled him.

 

The form that he saw in his dream was exactly the same as this, felt Ramlal. He immediately made inquiries of the shopkeeper.

 

He closely looked at the picture. "Who is he and from where?" He learnt that it was Sai from Shirdi. Ramlal was satisfied.

 

Later, he came to know the full details. Ramlal went to Shirdi and stayed near Baba, till his Mahasamadhi.

 

This was Baba's wish – to fulfill the desires of his devotees, by bringing them for darshan and letting them achieve their worldly or spiritual objectives.

 

As it is, all his devotees were fulfilled. He himself was desireless, unselfish, without ego, and without any attachment. His avatar was only to fulfill the desires of the devotees.

 

Know him to be a true saint – who is untouched by anger, and has no place for hatred, nor does he have even a glance for the selfish;

 

whose selfless love for all is his mission and who does not waste even a word on matters other than righteousness.

 

In conclusion, Baba has got his life story written by holding my hand so that the devotees remain continuously engrossed in remembering him. This is its purpose.

 

Therefore Hemad very humbly always requests the listeners, to hear the Sai Satcharita with faith and devotion.

 

You will attain peace thereby and it will help in getting rid of evil habits. Devotion at Sai's feet will be strengthened and it will give salvation.
